Ladybug Party

A Ladybug theme is great for a baby shower or a child’s birthday party. I did this theme for my daughter’s second birthday. I choose the colors of red, green, and yeloow as the color scheme. As my daughter has lots of friends that are little boys I avoided the color pink. For my plates I found some polka doted plates at Target. I went
with solid colored napkins and tablecloths in my color scheme. The party was morning snack time and I kept with my polka dot theme. I served sausage and cheese
balls, melon that I had scooped out with a melon baller, and mini muffins. The cake was a giant ladybug. I have learned that it is never to early to
shop the dollar bins at my local Target. I found these great red ladybug magnifying glasses for the goodie bags along with a book of 100 shiny bug stickers. For one of the games we played I found a package of 12
bug capsule that you “grow” in hot water. The child who grew the ladybug one!. For the goody bags I also picked up some small wooden polka dotted pinwheels at Hobby Lobby on 50% off of thier original .88 cents. We had the party at a local park and for the other activity we went on a “ladybug hunt” I found some ladybug foam stickers and used them to decorate a package of clothes pins. I then hid the “ladybugs” all over our area and had the kids hunt for them like Easter eggs. The kids looked really cute with ladybug clothepins stuck to them! For invites I cut out a small green circle for the head. I printed my info on a larger yellow circle and cut out a same sixrd large circle out of red and white ploka dotted paper. I cut the red dotted circle in half and using a decorative brad I attached the yellow circle the head and then the wings. You moved the wings apart to see the info on the yellow. They turned out very cute. I made sure to keep my circles small enough to fit in a regular invite envelope so I wouldn’t have to pay extra postage.

Lingerie Shower

this is a great bridal shower theme and could be done as a bacholorette party as well. A wonderful place to start with this theme is to find out weather or not the bride to be has a favorite scent. If she does you can base your shower on the color of this scent. A wonderful centerpiece and gift for the bride is a basket filled with a few items in her scent and therefore in the color scheme of your shower. There are many pre-made lingerie shower invitations on the market these days. I made mine from some shimmery cardstock in blue with our wording printed on it. I then cut out some stencils of a bra, panty, and slip. With a darker blue paint and a sponge I painted the stencil on each invitation for a unique, handmade invite in my party colors. Our food for the evening centered around fondue. We had a cheese fondue and a chocolate and white chocolate fondue for dessert. I served wine spritzers (half ginger ale to half white zinfandel) to drink. A little bit of blue fabric and ribbon went a long way for decorations. We used the fabric to line a basket and drape a table. The ribbon was used on a few baskets to tie them to our color. As a party favor I created sachets. I purchased small fabric favor bags (in our shimmery blue color) a pleasant potpourri and some non scented filler (I found some small clear bead like things on the candle isle of my local craft store that I could buy a large inexpensive bag of). I mixed my potpourri and my filler in a large bowl and filled my favor bags with the mixture.

Be sure to include on your invitation scent preferences of the bride to be as well as bra and panty size and favorite color.

Another fun take on this theme might be to go with an animal print theme, since a lot of really cute lingerie plays with animal prints these days. You could help your bride to be “be wild in the bedroom”.

What’s in the Package?

A great baby shower game is “What’s in the package?” You purchase about 6-10 small baby items. These items can come from the mom-to-be’s registry or just items that you think she will need. Keep the items small and easy to pass around. You then wrap these items in wrapping paper (gift bags won’t work for this game) and number each package. Be sure to keep a key so that you know what is in each numbered package. You hand out answer sheets to everyone with the number of packages that you have. Everyone passes around the packages. You are allowed to feel the package, smell the package, shake the package, just not allowed to open the package. The mom-to-be then gets to unwrap all of the packages and the guest who correctly identified the most packages wins.

Fabric Shower

A lot of nurseries now a days are not being done around a character or childish theme, but around graphic prints and bold colors. A great way to incorporate this is to use the same fabric in your shower.

We put together a great “fabric teddy bear” shower. We scanned the primary colored fabric and were then able to put a bear shape over the fabric color which we then used in our invitations. We also used the fabric to create table runners for our food tables and four eating tables. Our centerpieces were flower vases that had a teddy bear sitting in front of each one. Around the bears necks were ribbons made from strips of our fabric. We filled 3 floating candle bowls with colored red, green, blue, and yellow confetti stuff and set a teddy bear in each bowl to decorate the mantle. We used a bear or coordinating fabric where ever we could

Favorite Animal Turtle

A favorite animal theme also works for baby showers. Although the mother-to-be was having a boy I went with a green and yellow turtle them for this one. We were lucky enough to be able to have this shower in a location that had catering and settled on a nice brunch menu. If you have the means it is always nice to be able to have a shower or party in a place you don’t have to cook or clean up! My invitations were very simple featuring a turtle and yellow and green dots. I also printed matching thank you cards to keep things simple. For my centerpieces I had four floating candle bowls that placed green rocks in the bottom of and floated turtle bath toys. ( some belonged to my own daughter and the others were purchased for the mom to keep) I also purchased another turtle toy to sit on our sign in table. Because we were doing this shower in a catered environment, a lot of what we could do ourselves decorated wise was very limited, but we had turtles and our green and yellow color where we could!

Having a shower in your home or other do it all yourself place has the advantages that you are in control of everything. The flipside is a catered environment (like a restaurant or club) where you may not have much say in the decorating or food set up, but you are not responsible for the set up, cooking, or clean up. Can you think of other pros and cons to both party set ups?
